Pray that the Afar people may know God's great love.

My name is Afar. I'm 8 years old and live in the country of Ethiopia.

My home is in a very hot and dry place called the Afar Triangle. Look for me on this map...

About Me

My father is a nomadic herdsman. Nomadic means we move around a lot. Last year we moved six times because of a drought!
I live in a tribe, so when we move our entire tribe moves too. I don't like to move, but it's nice that our friends come with us. Our family has a lot of sheep and goats. We also have some cattle and camels too. My father is the most wealthy man in our tribe.
Even though my family has the most money in our tribe, we still have a hard time finding water for us and our animals. My job is to find water for everyone when we move to a new place. Sometimes the water is a long ways away and every day I will have to walk there to get it. Because we move a lot I do not go to school. My father says that next year my new job will be to help herd the animals.

Every day after I get water and feed the animals I like to play with my friends. We play our flutes and dance together. At night my friends and I have fun scaring animals that try to come near us by throwing sticks and rocks at them.

Every year we make a trip to the sea to offer up an offering for the safety of our village. My family believes that many trees and spirits of the dead have sacred powers. So to appease these spirits we offer sacrifices every year. We wear things to protect us from the spirits as well.
