Jordan – Food for Refugee Families
Refugee families that find their way to Jordan find safety from the terrorism and lawlessness that has torn their country apart. But in Jordan, their life is far from easy. They are not allowed to work, and yet they still have to pay rent and buy food. Grace Church gives away between 100 to 200 food bags each month to needy families. $20 will provide one food bag that contains rice, sugar, tea, macaroni, oil and a small can of meat.
Jordan
Jordan is the heart of the Middle East neighboring many politically sensitive countries. During and after two wars, around one million Iraqis fled to Jordan. Currently there are more than 500,000 Iraqi refugees living in Jordan. There is a steady number of refugees coming out of Iraq still today because of religious persecution. Many of these people have lived through tragic heartbreak over the last 10 to 20 years, but were determined to stick it out. When they lost their source of livelihood, were targeted by terrorists and their lives threatened they had to leave. Almost all of them have lost families members.
Though Jordan allows them to live under the protection of the country they do not allow them to work and many have no access to education. As a result, a growing number of them face extremely difficult living conditions.
Our GPPD Associates, Jody and Ruth, provide help and hope for hundreds of Iraqi families in one of the poorest districts of Amman. Still, in 2010 their Iraqi families have suffered increased persecution, even in Jordan, because of their involvement in this community, which meets so many needs in their lives.
Through donors and volunteers like you we are making a difference in the lives of many Iraqi refugees.
Education
Iraqi Grace School provided education for an estimated 250 refugees a year until the government shut it down in 2007. Currently, we provide English and computer lessons for adults and children.
One of our other Associates in Amman, Matt Thompson, is providing English education for Jordanian college students on the western side of Amman.
Food
Iraqi refugee families depend on the generosity of others to be able to meet one of life’s most basic needs: food. Our Associates, Jody and Ruth Miller assist in providing food, clothing and basic needs for hundreds of Iraqi refugees. We are looking for people to partner with us and provide food and basic needs for these Iraqi families.
Relief
During the war, we helped to provide aid to many families in Baghdad and the surrounding areas.
Training
In 2012, our Associates, Matt and Lauren Thompson, are planning to begin an internship for people wanting to be involved in bringing help and hope to the Middle East. If are you are interested in learning more about this internship please contact us.
