THE REFUGEE PLIGHT
Over the last number of years around one million refugees from Syria and Iraq have crossed their home borders into the safe-haven country of Jordan. Running from poverty, war, violence, and persecution - only to be met by additional hardships of searching for work, education for children, providing the basic needs of their families, and missing loved ones. Those with some access to money may rent an apartment in the poor section of a large city, while others are in large refugee camps.
Most arrive to Jordan with one or possibly two suitcases which hold all of their earthly belongings. When winter arrives, many are unprepared for the cold temperatures. Whether they live in an apartment or in a refugee camp it is very difficult to keep warm.
About half of the refugee population are children and teenagers. Everyday many of the children deal with the pain and nightmares from the traumatic experiences they had in their home countries. With a push for education for children and the possibility of immigration, it helps give them hope of a brighter future.
Despite the war torn countries they have fled from, the refugees miss their homes and long for the day that their home country would have peace and not war.

WHAT WILL WE DO?
While serving with our Associates and National Partners, you will have the opportunity to see how God is at work despite the pain and tragedy of war and terrorism. You will visit refugee families in their homes, hearing stories that will bring perspective to truly how amazing and resiliant refugees are. We will help famlies with food and other basic necessities when possible.
We will spend time encouraging our partners on the ground, as well as other staff and workers there. We will participate in church services as well as multiple women's, men's, youth events. As our team begins to form, we will utilize your gifts and abilities to finalize our specific details.
Unfortunately, due to current restrictions, we will not be able to visit one of the refugee camps.
Jordan is the home to where many of the Bible stories you have read actually took place. Want to deepen your understanding and meaning of the Bible? We will visit a few Biblical sites during our time in Jordan. Possible places include Amman Citadel (read story of David and Bathsheba), Mt. Nebo, Dead Sea and the place where Jesus was baptized 2,000 years ago.
YOUR SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY
We will stay at the local church where our GPPD serve and travel to and from locations by van or taxi. Safety is one of our top priorities. Our workers on the ground know and understand the country and culture very well. They will always have your best interest in mind. Translators will be available when needed.
