For families suffering from malnutrition and poverty, livestock is desired more than any other thing. Most rural Indian villagers are field laborers, where the work is only seasonal, They work long, dangerous hours in the hot sun and the pay is very little. Many times it takes them away from their family, leaving their children with someone else to care for them or to fend for themselves.

Animals such as rabbits, chickens, goats, sheep, pigs, cows and water buffaloes can be used to supply income when they are not working in the fields and eventually can become their sole income in some cases. The animals can be used to supply food like eggs, milk and butter. Offspring from the livestock can be sold for income. Each family given livestock is encouraged to gift the first of their offspring to another person in need. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
